Royal Sun Resort’s Commitment to Protecting Shearwaters in Tenerife

This time of year marks the beginning of shearwater season in Tenerife —a very special and sensitive moment for one of the most emblematic seabirds of the Canary Islands. The Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea borealis), affectionately known locally as “guaya-guaya”, attempts its first night flights toward the ocean during this period.

However, artificial lighting can easily disorient young birds, causing them to descend and fall to the ground. Once grounded, they are unable to take off again and require quick and careful assistance. For this reason, an official rescue protocol is in place to ensure their safe handling and transfer to wildlife recovery centers.

Our role in this effort

At Royal Sun Resort, we are strongly committed to preserving the natural environment that surrounds us. While we do not prepare the rescue boxes ourselves, we do have ready-to-use boxes available at the hotel to comply with the established protocol whenever a bird is found. Our team is informed and prepared to act correctly, ensuring the bird’s safety while coordinating with the appropriate authorities.

We believe that caring for the environment is an essential part of the experience we offer our guests and of our responsibility as a hotel located in such a unique natural setting. We invite both our visitors and the local community to join us in protecting the rich biodiversity that makes the Canary Islands such an extraordinary place.
